Want to learn how to make extra money from home?

As someone who’s been working from home for a few years now, I can legitimately say that finding ways to earn from home has been life-changing for me. I quit a job I didn’t love, I get to spend more time with my wife, and I do it all on my own schedule.

Finding ways to make extra money can help you pay off debt, save up for a down payment, put more away for retirement, and so many other things. It’s how you create a better financial life for yourself now and in the future.

What you’ll love about the ideas on this list is that they are all flexible. You get to pick when you work and how much. This is your time, your schedule.

Alright, I know what you came here for…

How to Make Extra Money From Home | 10 Ways to Make Money at Home

1. Run Facebook ads for small business owners

Running Facebook ads is just one of several different digital marketing services you could offer local businesses, but Facebook ads are the most requested service right now.

Small business owners always need help getting more customers, whether they’re an online or brick-and-mortar store. And Facebook continues to be one of the best platforms to advertise and grow their business on.

Running Facebook ads is such an in-demand service because you can create highly targeted promotions – you’re showing ads to the kind of people who are more likely to be interested in the business. There’s also a much higher ROI than traditional forms of advertising, like newspapers, TV ads, or radio.

Learning how to run Facebook ads for small business owners helps them maximize their ad budget and grow their business.

You can realistically make $1,000-$1,500 extra each month running Facebook ads for one client, and it takes just a few hours of work each week.

This is how I was able to earn money from home after quitting my job as a high school band director to run this site full time. I needed to make some extra cash while my blog grew, and after a few months of running ads and picking up new clients, I was out-earning what I made as a teacher.

If you want to learn how to make extra money from home as a Facebook ads manager, check out the Facebook Side Hustle Course.

This course teaches you three important keys to making this business work:

  1. How to set up a Facebook ads system for small or local businesses
  2. How to find clients who need your services and are willing to pay for it
  3. Exactly what to say to get these potential clients to say yes to your services

One of my favorite things about teaching this course is watching my students start and grow their side hustle, and here’s what someone recently shared in our Facebook group:

2. Start a blog

I couldn’t explain how to make extra money from home without talking about blogging. I created this site in 2015, and it’s been, by far, the best job I’ve ever had.

Starting a blog has legitimately changed my life. I went from being a broke high school teacher working 70-80 hours a week to a 7-figure business owner.

That sounds amazing, right? Maybe even a little hard to believe?

The reality of blogging is that while it is insanely flexible and has virtually unlimited earning potential, blogging is a very slow business model overall. It can take a few months before you start earning anything from your site, and the vast majority of bloggers won’t make a 7-figure income.

However, it’s not unrealistic to earn $2,000-$5,000/month in blogging income. You can learn how to make extra money from home blogging on your own time, and you can blog about pretty much anything you want.

I started writing about personal finance because helping people pay off debt, start side hustles, and save money is something I’m legitimately passionate about.

Your blog can be something you love talking about – cooking, parenting, dogs, tiny house living, etc. Or it can be something that addresses a pain point, aka help people learn how to budget, lose weight, learn how to start an online business, etc.

If you want to learn more, I highly recommend signing up for my free email course that explains how to start a successful blog. It covers everything from picking a topic, deciding on a name for your blog, and how to find your first 1,000 true fans.

3. Work as a proofreader

Proofreading takes a special kind of person: you can easily spot errors in books, online articles, and Facebook posts. And not only can you spot them, but you also really, really want to fix them.

If that sounds like you, you might be a good fit for proofreading. Proofreaders are responsible for finding and correcting grammatical errors, punctuation mistakes, and misspellings. They ensure copy looks professional and polished before it’s published.

There’s a lot of work out there for anyone who wants to learn how to make extra money from home as a proofreader. You can work for bloggers, content writers, online business owners, professionals, academics, authors, and more.

New proofreaders average $15-$20/hour and more experienced ones make $25-$50/hour.

4. Work as a Pinterest virtual assistant

Pinterest virtual assistants (VAs) help online business owners like me optimize our Pinterest accounts, diversify our traffic, increase affiliate sales, and more.

This is a great way to make extra money from home if you’re already familiar with Pinterest, because you probably already understand how the platform works.

Pinterest virtual assistants average $500/month per client. But working as a Pinterest VA isn’t the same as pinning for fun. You’ll need to understand how to:

  • Create eye-catching pins
  • Use Tailwind for scheduling
  • Do keyword research
  • Optimize images and pins
  • Understand how Pinterest analytics work

5. Create an online course

I know what you’re thinking, “There’s no way I’m qualified to teach an online course!”

The truth is that nearly everyone has a skill they can teach others.

Have you built some killer sales funnels? Are you really smart about time management? Have you mastered Photoshop? Do you have effective study skills? Do you paint beautiful watercolor landscapes?

Any of those things would make a great online course, and really, there are thousands of different topics you could teach.

From the student’s perspective, taking an online course is an ideal way to learn a new skill – they’re less expensive than many in-person classes, and you can learn in your own time from home.

For course creators, online courses can be a fairly passive way to make extra money from home. See, once you create your course, it can exist online indefinitely (all of the lessons are created in advance so you’re not teaching live). Not only does this create a source of passive income, but you can also serve more students over a longer period.

You don’t need an existing online following to create a course either. Course creation platforms like Teachable and Kajabi have built-in marketing tools to sell your course, and platforms like Udemy and Skillshare have browseable marketplaces so students can find your course.

One of my readers learned how to make extra money from home teaching online graphic design courses, and she’s gone from earning a few thousand dollars a month to more than $80,000/month. Here’s one of her most recent payouts.

6. Become an online tutor

Maybe you’re not ready to dive into creating your own course – that’s okay! You can still make extra money from home helping people learn.

Online tutoring is a growing field, and there are a couple of different approaches…

Tutor online with Wyzant

Wyzant is a platform that connects students who need subject-specific help with tutors. Tutors pick the topics they teach on, and you need to write a letter to Wyzant when you sign up that explains why you’d make a good tutor. This should include educational background, degrees, certificates, etc.

You set your own fees on Wyzant, and Wyzant gets a 25% commission while you keep 75%. Most tutors charge between $30-$60/hour for their services.

Become an English tutor with VIPKid

VIPKid teachers help young Chinese students learn English via 25-minute long video lessons. VIPKid handles all of the lesson planning for you, something I really appreciate as a former teacher.

You don’t need to have a degree in English or teaching to work for VIPKid, but you will need a bachelor’s degree and at least some experience working with kids. That could be raising your kids, babysitting, working at a summer camp, etc.

VIPKid teachers make $14-$22/hour.

7. Start a freelance business

Freelancing is when you contract your services out to other business owners, and it’s a massively growing field – there are now more than 57 million Americans freelancing. That’s 4 million more than last year.

One of the reasons this option is growing is because more and more companies, big and small, are turning to freelancers instead of keeping all of the work in-house. It saves companies money and opens up a flexible option for anyone with marketable skills.

Speaking of, here are just a few of the freelancing services you can offer:

You can learn how to make extra money from home in this article about Fiverr: Everything You Need to Know About How to Make Money on Fiverr. Fiverr is a freelance marketplace where you can list your service and find paying clients.

Platforms like Fiverr are good for beginners, but most take a percentage of each job you complete. Fiverr takes 20%.

That’s why I also recommend starting a website for your freelance business. A Bluehost hosted WordPress site is a great option IMHO.

Having your own site gives potential clients a way to learn about your services and who you are, and it gives them a way to contact you. You can keep more of your income this way, and establish yourself as an expert in the field, and some freelancers go on to blogging or creating courses to diversify their income.

8. Rent out your car

There are a growing number of peer-to-peer rental platforms where you can rent your car out when you’re not using it. This is a very passive way to earn from home because it requires very little effort on your end.

There are a few different platforms for renting your car:

  • Turo: You keep 65% to 85% of the rental cost when you list on Turo, and Turo says that the average U.S. host can earn around $545/month on Turo.
  • HyreCar: This company rents cars out to rideshare and delivery drivers specifically. HyreCar says that most cars are listed for around $35/day, and HyreCar takes a 15%-25% commission.
  • Getaround: This site does hourly rentals for personal and professional drivers. Most cars on Getaround are listed for $6-$10/hour, and there is a $20/month subscription fee to use the service.

You can expect more wear and tear on your car if you’re renting it out to make extra money from home. You’ll need more frequent oil changes, brake pads replaced more often, new tires, etc.

You should plan on setting 10% of what you earn aside for maintenance and repairs, but all of these companies do offer comprehensive insurance companies in case something happens to your car while it’s being rented.

9. Start an Etsy business

Etsy is a marketplace for creative, handmade, and vintage goods. It’s blown up over the past few years, and it’s become a go-to place when someone wants to buy something unique.

There are all kinds of things you can make and sell on Etsy: soap, crocheted hats, jewelry, baby clothes, wall hangings, etc. Craft supplies are another popular thing to sell.

Another option is printables – these are things like calendars, invites, thank you cards, checklists, planner pages, etc. What’s great about printables is that they are a passive way to earn from home because you create a downloadable file that can be purchased over and over again, and your customer prints it at home.

If you want to learn how to make extra money from home selling Etsy printables, check out the E Printables Side Hustle Course. Here are a few things you’ll learn in the course:

  • How to come up with product ideas
  • Using Canva to create your products
  • Listing and marketing your products
  • How to optimize your Etsy shop

10. Sell your stuff online

This is probably a pretty obvious way to make money from home, but what you might not know is that there are tons of different selling sites and even ways to grow a business.

Sell your old electronics

Decluttr is a site for selling your gently used phones, video game consoles, CDs, DVDs, video games, laptops, tablets, and more. They take used items, refurbish them, and sell them online.

Here’s how Decluttr works:

  • Get a free valuation of your items – this is how much Decluttr will pay you for your stuff
  • You have 28 days to accept the offer and send in your item
  • Pack you item and use the free shipping label Decluttr sends you
  • Ship the package to Decluttr
  • Get paid via PayPal or direct deposit the day after Decluttr receives your item

Decluttr makes sure there isn’t any personal information left on your device. Oh, I almost forgot – you can sell your old Legos on Decluttr too.

Sell your clothes

Two of the most popular sites for selling your clothes are Poshmark and ThredUp.

Poshmark is a platform where you can list gently used clothes, shoes, and accessories for men, women, and children. You’ll want to take high-quality pictures, write a good description, and price things competitively. When someone is interested in something you’re selling, they send you an offer, and if you accept, you package it up and ship it out.

It’s free to list on Poshmark, but they take $2.95 for sales under $15. There is a 20% fee for sales of $15 or more.

ThredUp is a styling service that sends boxes of clothes for customers to try on at home, and customers only pay for what they keep. ThredUp focuses on gently used clothing, and you can sell your stuff using their Clean Out Kit.

There’s no guarantee that ThredUp will accept all of your clothes – you only get paid for the items they keep. For things they don’t keep, you can have them sent back for a fee or ThredUp will donate them for you.

Here’s how the Clean Out Kit works:

  • You request the kit from ThredUp
  • Fill it with clothes that have no visible signs of wear, no damage, and no alterations
  • Ship the Clean Out Kit back to ThredUp
  • ThredUp inspects your items and only keeps about 40% of what is sent to them
  • You’re paid a percentage of the resale value – the percentage increases with the resale value

Sell on Amazon FBA

Amazon FBA is when third-party sellers (people like you) list and sell things on Amazon. You’re responsible for finding items to sell, creating listings, and shipping them to Amazon. They take care of the technical parts of selling, processing payments, and shipping items to customers.

Many Amazon FBA sellers start selling things from around their house – you get to test the platform before spending money on your inventory.

There are all kinds of different selling niches, and I have one reader who made $25,000 last year selling used books on Amazon.

You can learn how Amazon FBA works, what the selling fees are like, popular selling niches, and more in What is Amazon FBA? | How it Works, Fees, & More.

Make money as a flea market flipper

Flea market flipping is when you find things to sell at flea markets, garage sales, and thrift stores. You can sell your flips on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, your own website, etc.

Rob and Melissa of Flea Market Flipper made $79,000 in one year flipping items, and they were only working 10-15/hours a week. They teach you their strategies and how to get started in this free 75-minute webinar Flea Market Flipper: Learn the Art of Buying and Selling.

How do I make an extra $1000 a month?

If your financial goal is an extra thousand dollars a month, I highly recommend running Facebook ads for local businesses. It takes around 2-3 hours per client once you have your system all set up, and the average pay per client is $1,000-$1,500 per month.

Freelancing, working as a virtual assistant, proofreading, and tutoring are all options that can realistically bring in a steady stream of money each month.

Creating an online course and blogging can bring in significantly more, but it might not be as steady, especially in the beginning.

What’s great about a lot of these options is that you can work on more than one at a time to stack and diversify your income.

How to make extra money from home – the final word

You just learned about 10 different legit ways to make extra money, but there are still lots of other options available. The goal is to find something that works for your schedule and helps you earn the extra money you need.

Think about the kinds of things you enjoy doing, what skills you have, and what you’re willing to learn how to do.

I’ve been making money from home for a few years now – running Facebook ads, blogging, and creating online courses – and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Now that I have a baby on the way, I’m so freaking excited that I’ve created a life that allows me to work and earn from home, and I know I’ll get to spend more time with him. That’s one of the things that is so great about working from home. It’s a flexible way to earn money while doing more of what you love.
